Claude Code is a tool from Anthropic that puts Claude, their AI assistant, inside your project. Instead of copying code from a chat window, you describe what you want, and Claude Code reads your files, makes the changes, and runs the commands.

AstroBeginner is built with it, so we can describe it from experience.

What it actually does

When you start Claude Code in a project folder and type a request, it:

  1. Reads the files it needs to understand your project
  2. Explains what it plans to change
  3. Asks for your approval, then edits the files
  4. Runs commands like npm run build or npm run dev and reads the output
  5. Fixes problems it finds, and reports back

It behaves like a careful colleague who can type very fast. You stay in charge of what gets approved.

Where you can use it

According to its documentation, Claude Code runs in your terminal, as a desktop app for Mac and Windows, inside VS Code and JetBrains editors, on the web at claude.ai/code, and even from Slack. The terminal version is the one most guides show.

What it costs

Claude Code needs a paid Claude subscription or API credits. It isn’t part of the free claude.ai plan. Check Anthropic’s pricing page for current plans.

Should a beginner use it?

Yes, with two conditions.

Learn the basics first. If you don’t know what a page, a layout or a build is, you can’t tell whether Claude Code did a good job. Our free course takes about two hours and covers all of it.

Use Git. Claude Code makes real changes to real files. With Git, every change can be undone. Without it, a bad afternoon is permanent.

How it fits with Astro

Astro projects created with npm create astro@latest include an AGENTS.md file that tells Claude Code how the project works and where the docs are. Astro’s dev server also detects AI agents and runs in the background for them, so the agent can check pages while it works.

You can go further by connecting Claude Code to the official Astro docs, which stops it relying on memory.

Getting started

Our guide to building an Astro site with Claude has the install command and your first three requests. For OpenAI’s equivalent, see building an Astro site with ChatGPT.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Code free?

No. Its documentation says it needs a paid Claude subscription or API credits. The chat at claude.ai has a free plan, but it can't edit your files.

Is Claude Code safe to let loose on my project?

It asks before making changes and running commands, and you can set how much it's allowed to do on its own. Keep your project in Git so you can undo anything.

Do I need to know how to code to use it?

It helps to know the basics, so you can judge what it's doing. Our free course gets you there in an afternoon.

Stuck on a step?

Check the common errors guide, look up a word in the glossary, or ask in the official Astro Discord, where the support channels are friendly to beginners.
