WordPress and Astro both make websites, but they work very differently. Neither one is better for everybody, so here’s how to choose.

The main difference

WordPress is software that runs on a server. Each time someone visits, it can build the page from a database. You log in to a dashboard to make changes.

Astro builds every page in advance, on your computer or your host’s build system. Visitors get ready-made files, and there’s no server software or database to look after.

Side-by-side comparison

Astro WordPress
Software cost Free Free

Editing Files on your computer Dashboard in a browser
Speed Fast by default Depends on theme, plugins and host

Non-technical editors Needs a separate CMS Built in

When to choose Astro

  • You want a fast site with very little upkeep.
  • You’re happy editing text files and running commands.
  • You’d like to learn how websites really work.
  • You want free or very cheap hosting.

When to choose WordPress

  • Other people will edit the site and need a dashboard.
  • You need a large online store or a membership site.
  • You depend on a specific plugin.
  • You never want to open a terminal.

What about EmDash?

Since April 2026 there’s been a third option. EmDash is an open-source CMS from Cloudflare that’s built on Astro, and it gives you a WordPress-style dashboard on an Astro site. Read what is EmDash and our EmDash vs WordPress comparison.

Our recommendation

If you’re building a blog, portfolio or small business site and you enjoy learning, start with Astro. If a team of non-technical people will run the site, WordPress is still the easier choice, and that’s a perfectly good decision.
