People often ask whether they should use Astro or EmDash. The question is a little off, because EmDash is built on Astro. The real question is this: do you need a dashboard for your content, or are files enough?

What each one is

Astro is a tool for building websites. With Astro alone, your content lives in files in your project. To publish a blog post, you add a Markdown file. See what is Astro.

EmDash is a content management system that runs on top of Astro. It adds a database and a dashboard, so you can write and edit in your browser. See what is EmDash.

Side-by-side comparison

Astro alone Astro with EmDash
Where content lives Files in your project A database
How you edit A code editor A dashboard in your browser
How pages are made Built ahead of time Built on a server, on request
Hosting Any static host, often free Cloudflare or a Node.js server
Who can publish People comfortable with files Anyone with a login
Setup Simplest More moving parts

Choose Astro alone if

  • You’re the only person editing the site.
  • You’re happy writing in Markdown.
  • You want the cheapest, simplest hosting. A static site can go on GitHub Pages or Cloudflare for free.
  • You’re learning. Fewer parts means fewer things to break.

Our free course builds exactly this kind of site.

Choose EmDash if

  • Other people need to write or edit, and they won’t use a code editor.
  • You publish often, and you want to do it from a browser.
  • You’re moving from WordPress and want to keep a dashboard.
  • You need drafts, user roles, or a media library.

What you give up with a CMS

A dashboard is convenient, but it isn’t free of trade-offs:

  • Hosting is less flexible. EmDash sites are built on a server, so a static-only host like GitHub Pages won’t work.
  • There’s more to look after. You now have a database, logins and uploads to keep safe and backed up.
  • It’s newer. Plain Astro has years of tutorials. EmDash has months.

Our recommendation

Start with plain Astro. It teaches you how everything works, it costs nothing to host, and it’s enough for most personal sites and many business sites.

Move to EmDash when editing files becomes the thing that slows you down, usually because someone else needs to publish.
