Astro 7: What Beginners Need to Know
Astro 7 brings faster builds and stricter HTML rules. Here's what changed, in plain English, and what it means if you're just starting out.
Tested on Astro 7.4

In this guide
Astro 7.0 came out on June 22, 2026, and the 7.x line has continued since. The short version for beginners: your site builds faster, and Astro is pickier about your HTML.
Faster builds
Much of Astro’s build system has been rewritten in the Rust programming language. That includes the bundler, through Vite 8, the .astro compiler, and the Markdown processor, a new tool called Sätteri.
Astro’s own benchmarks show builds running 15 to 61 percent faster. You’ll notice this most on sites with lots of pages. On a small first site, builds were already quick.
Stricter HTML
This is the change you’re likely to run into. The new compiler no longer fixes your mistakes for you, so an unclosed tag stops the build with an error. See how to fix it.
That’s a good thing, even if it feels annoying. Your mistakes get caught right away, not after they’ve gone live.
Spaces between elements
Astro now removes whitespace between inline elements on separate lines. If two words run together, add {" "} between them.
Other changes you may read about
- Markdown plugins: if a tutorial mentions remark or rehype plugins, they now need extra setup, because Astro no longer uses that system by default.
- Astro DB: the
@astrojs/dbpackage has been removed. - Reserved file:
src/fetch.tsnow has a special meaning, so don’t use that name for your own file.
Should you worry?
If you’re starting today, no. Just install the latest version, and everything on this site will match what you see. Each guide here shows the version it was tested on.

How do I upgrade an existing project?
Run npx @astrojs/upgrade in your project folder, then read the official upgrade guide for anything that affects your code.
Do old tutorials still work?
Many do, but check their version. Anything showing unclosed HTML tags, or using Astro DB, will need changes.
