Best AI Tools for Building Astro Sites in 2026
Six AI tools that can build or change an Astro site, from free chat assistants to coding agents and in-browser builders, and which to start with.

In this guide
Every week there’s a new AI tool that promises to build your website. Here are the ones worth a beginner’s time for Astro, grouped by how they work. We use Claude Code to build this site, and we’ve described the others from their official documentation.
The three kinds of tool
- Chat assistants write code you paste in yourself. Free, and the best way to learn.
- Coding agents work inside your project. They edit files and run commands, with your approval.
- Browser builders create a whole project from a description, in a web page.
1. Claude (chat) and Claude Code (agent)
Anthropic’s assistant. The chat at claude.ai has a free plan. Claude Code is the agent, and it runs in your terminal, a desktop app, VS Code, JetBrains and the web. It needs a paid plan.
Start here if: you want an agent that explains itself well. Guide: build an Astro site with Claude.
2. ChatGPT (chat) and Codex (agent)
OpenAI’s assistant. The chat at chatgpt.com has a free plan. Codex is the agent, available in the terminal, a desktop app, VS Code, Cursor and Windsurf, and included with paid ChatGPT plans.
Start here if: you already pay for ChatGPT. Guide: build an Astro site with ChatGPT.
3. Cursor
A code editor built around AI. It looks like VS Code, with an assistant that can edit across your project. Astro’s docs include setup steps for connecting Cursor to the official Astro documentation.
Start here if: you’d rather work in an editor than a terminal.
4. GitHub Copilot
An AI assistant that lives inside VS Code and other editors, suggesting code as you type and handling bigger tasks through its agent. Astro’s docs cover connecting its coding agent to the Astro documentation.
Start here if: you use VS Code and want help without changing tools.
5. Bolt.new
A browser-based builder from StackBlitz. You describe a site, and it creates and runs the project in your browser. Comparisons list Astro among the frameworks it supports, which makes it one of the few builders that isn’t locked to React. Check its own docs for current support.
Start here if: you want to see something on screen in minutes, and you’ll move the code to your own computer later.
6. Astro’s own AI support
Not a tool you install, but worth knowing. Astro projects come with an AGENTS.md file for AI tools, Astro’s dev server detects coding agents and runs in the background for them, and there’s an official docs MCP server that any of the tools above can use. See how to connect AI tools to the Astro docs.
What we’d skip for Astro
Builders that only produce React apps, such as Lovable and v0, aren’t a fit for an Astro site. They’re good tools for what they do, but you’d be fighting them.
How to choose
| If you want | Use |
|---|---|
| To learn, for free | Claude or ChatGPT chat |
| An agent in your terminal | Claude Code or Codex |
| An agent in your editor | Cursor or GitHub Copilot |
| Something on screen in minutes | Bolt.new |
Whatever you pick, read mistakes AI makes with Astro first. Every tool on this list makes them.
Frequently asked questions
Which AI tool is best for a complete beginner?
Start with a free chat, either Claude or ChatGPT, and paste the code in yourself. You'll learn the most. Move to a coding agent once you understand what the files do.
Can an AI tool build my whole site in one go?
It can produce something, but you won't understand it and won't be able to fix it. Smaller steps with checks in between produce better sites and better builders.
Stuck on a step?
Check the common errors guide, look up a word in the glossary, or ask in the official Astro Discord, where the support channels are friendly to beginners.
