Claude vs ChatGPT for Building Websites: A Beginner's Comparison
Claude and ChatGPT can both build an Astro site. Here's how they differ in practice, what each costs to use for coding, and how to choose.

In this guide
People ask us which AI to use for building a website, as if one of them is the obvious answer. In our experience, the choice of tool matters less than how you use it. But there are real differences. Here they are, without the hype.
We use Claude Code to build AstroBeginner, so we know it better. We’ve tried to be fair to both.
What they have in common
- Both have a free chat you can use to generate code.
- Both have a coding agent that works inside your project: Claude Code from Anthropic, and Codex from OpenAI.
- Both coding agents read an
AGENTS.mdfile in your project, which Astro and EmDash create for you. - Both can connect to the official Astro docs through MCP.
- Both make the same kinds of mistakes with Astro, mostly by using old APIs from memory.

How they feel to use
In our experience, both agents follow the same loop: read the project, propose a change, ask for approval, run a command, check the result. The differences are in style, and style preferences vary from person to person.
The honest advice is to try the free chat of each one with the same request, and see which explanations you understand better. The one whose explanations you follow is the one you’ll learn from.
What matters more than the choice
- Create the project with Astro’s own tool, not by asking the AI to write everything.
- Say your Astro version in your first message, every time.
- Keep steps small, and check your site after each one.
- Connect the tool to the Astro docs so it stops guessing. See how to connect AI tools to the Astro docs.
- Read and run the code before you publish.
Do those five things and either tool will build you a good site. Skip them and neither will.
Our recommendation
If you want a free start, use whichever chat you already have an account for. If you’re ready for a coding agent, pick the one bundled with a plan you’d pay for anyway.

Frequently asked questions
Which is better at Astro, Claude or ChatGPT?
Both produce working Astro sites when you give them your version and keep the steps small. Neither reliably knows the newest Astro features from memory, so connect either one to the Astro docs.
Can I use both?
Yes. Many people chat with one and use the other's coding agent, or ask one to review the other's work.
